Glossary definition of Frequency

Frequency is a measure of the number of times a vibration or other cyclic process repeats itself in a specified time. Frequency can also be thought of as the number of waves that pass a given point in the specified time, and it is usually measured in Hertz (Hz), which is the same as cycles per second (cps).

The term frequency can be used to describe different types of signal (such as audio or radio waves), or to specify equipment performance (such as network operating frequencies and system bandwidth). For a radio signal the frequency is equal to the speed of light divided by the signal's wavelength.
