Glossary definition of NFC

NFC is the abbreviation of Near Field Communication and is a form of identification.

Thanks to this technique it is possible to make payments by scanning a mobile phone with a NFC-chip. NFC can also be used as a ticket system to allow entrance to, for example theme parks. NFC has already been used in Japan to pay train tickets. NFC is an extension to RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). RFID has a storage function and it can be used to send information one-way. NFC communicates two-ways and is capable to receive signals. The technique is developed by Philips in cooperation with Sony and Nokia.
