Glossary definition of Recommended Standard 232

Also known as: RS232

RS-232 (Recommended Standard 232) is a standard type of connector, commonly used as the serial port interface for a computer. The serial port is used as an input-output connection for the transfer of serial data between the computer and other external peripheral equipment.

The RS-232 is a nine-wire connector, originally defined by the EIA (Electronics Industry Association). Some suitably equipped cellular phones can be coupled to a PC computer using a RS-232 cable, which enables data to be transferred between the phone and the PC, such as personal contact directories, or SMS text messages.
