Glossary definition of Soft Key

Also known as: Softkey

Soft Key is a mobile phone key that has the ability to change its function-hence the name soft. On phones that use them, there are usually 2 soft keys situated immediately below the LCD screen, and as the keys' functions change this is indicated by labels in the lower part of the screen, so that the user knows what the keys are to be used for.

By adopting this soft key approach the navigation operations are simplified, and menu selection is quicker. Without the use of soft keys there would either be the need for more keys on the phone, or a greater number of key presses would be required to select from the menu options.
